Lung Screening
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women worldwide, with nearly 160,000 Americans dying from lung cancer each year.
Results of the National Lung Screening Trail showed that screening with low-dose CT compared to chest x-ray reduced lung cancer deaths among older heavy smokers by 20 percent. Improved detection at earlier stages, when lung cancer is more easily treated, is key to increased survival. If you are at high risk for lung cancer and you and your doctor determine that you should be screened, it is important that you receive your low-dose CT (LDCT) scan at a facility with staff who have expertise in lung cancer screening.
Following in line with annual preventive screenings such as mammograms, colonoscopies, prostate exams, lung cancer is now approved for an annual screening, if qualification criteria is met. If you fall in the high-risk category for lung cancer, you may qualify for this annual screening with a low dose CT. With board certified radiologists to interpret the study.
Qualification Criteria for Lung Screenings
- Age 55 – 77 (Medicare Beneficiaries)
- Asymptomatic – no signs or symptoms of lung cancer
- Tobacco smoking history of at least 30 pack-years (one pack-year =smoking one pack per day for one year; 1 pack = 20 cigarettes)
- Current smoker or has quit smoking within the last 15 years
For the initial LDCT lung cancer screening, a Medicare beneficiary must have a lung cancer screening counseling and shared decision making visit with a physician or nurse practitioner in order to get the written order for the LDCT.

How to Prepare For Your Imaging Procedure
If you have a scheduled appointment, please discuss the procedure and any special instructions with your doctor before you arrive. If a test is ordered while you are a patient at the hospital, your physician, nurse or technologist can explain the procedure and answer any questions you have.
These general guidelines will help you prepare for and stay comfortable during your procedure:
- Wear loose-fitting clothes. Don’t wear items containing metal. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown. In some cases, you may be asked to remove jewelry, watches, hairpins, eyeglasses or dentures.
- Some tests require that you go without eating or drinking for a specified time beforehand. Be sure to ask your doctor about this at least 24 hours before your procedure.
- Tell your technologist if there is any chance you may be pregnant or if you are breastfeeding.
- Tell your technologist if you are allergic to shellfish or iodine.
- Some procedures require you to remain still for a period of time. Your technologist will explain what you need to do for a successful procedure.
Referral Required A physician referral is required for Imaging Services services.
Every woman’s experience with her breasts is similarly unique. While one person may have dramatic changes in the appearance and feel of her breasts over time related to menstrual cycle, pregnancy, birth control pills, age and weight changes, others may never be aware of symptoms. It helps to become comfortable with the appearance and feel of your own breasts so that you can be confident when there is a change you want to discuss with your doctor. If you feel a lump, don’t wait. Make the call.
